Lesson 8. Countries, “where” and “from where” in Uzbek

How do you say Egypt in Uzbek? It’s Misr. And Uzbekistan? Of course, O’zbekiston. In this lesson, you will learn the names of countries in Uzbek (at least 15), including Uzbekistan’s neighboring countries. You’ll also learn how to correctly ask the questions “Where?” and “From where?” in Uzbek and how to use the affixxes -da and -dan.

Additionally, you’ll learn how to say “I don’t know” (Bilmayman) and “I think” (Menimcha).
The lesson includes audio from native Uzbek speakers and a variety of practice activities — from dialogues to a crossword and a map of the dunyo (dunyo xaritasi).

Mamlakatlar (Countries)

Mamlakatlar means “countries” in Uzbek.

Exercise 1. Where is this music from? Listen to the clips and write the numbers from 1 to 5. One country is already filled in for you.

Exercise 3. Mamlakatlar (Countries)
a. Listen and repeat the country names in Uzbek. By the way, how do you say “Uzbekistan” in Uzbek? — O’zbekiston or O’zbekiston Respublikasi.

Neighboring countries of Uzbekistan in Uzbek: Qozog’iston, Qirg’iziston, Tojikiston, Afg’oniston, Turkmaniston

Egypt in Uzbek is Misr. It’s important to remember: Misr is the Arabic name for Egypt, and it’s also used in Uzbek.

Country names in Uzbek are written with a capital letter.
Turkiya, not turkiya
-lar means plural

b. Write the name of your country _____________

d. Cover the words. Look at the pictures. Name the countries in Uzbek.

Exercise 4. Listen and repeat the conversation.
A: Qayerdansiz? – Where are you from?
B: Kiyevdanman. – I’m from Kyiv.
A: Kiyev qayerda? – Where’s Kyiv?
B: Ukrainada. – In Ukraine.

-dan — from, origin: Kiyevdan, Moskvadan
-da — in, location: Ukrainada, Rossiyada

Exercise 5. Recite this conversation from memory, using your own hometown (shahar) and country (mamlakat).

Exercise 8. U qayerda? – Where is it? in Uzbek

Speaking practice. Ask and answer questions about cities and countries in Uzbek. Work in pairs.
Use phrases like:
A: Istanbul qayerda? — Where’s Istanbul?
B: Turkiyada. — In Turkey.
Menimcha Turkiyada. — I think (in my opinion) it’s in Turkey.
Bilmayman. — I don’t know.
A asks questions like Istanbul qayerda?, and B answers using one of three ways. If the answer is correct, say Ha and repeat the correct version. If the answer is wrong or the person doesn’t know, say Yo’q and give the correct answer. Then switch roles.
