What is this and I have in Uzbek – Lesson 40

How to ask “what is this?” in Uzbek or say “I have a phone”? In this lesson, you will learn useful phrases and expressions that will come in handy in a shop, in conversations with friends, and on the street. We will also practice saying what we have, where things are located, and who is holding what in their hands. All of this — with audio and exercises.

Exercise 1. Listen and repeat the following phrases in Uzbek. Learn them.

Oh yo’q! — Oh no!
Telefonim qayerda? — Where is my phone?
Mening ko’zoynagim qayerda? — Where are my glasses?
Bu nima? — What is this?
Bular nima(lar)? — What are these?
Menimcha, bu ID karta yoki shaxs guvohnomasi. — I think this is an ID card or identity document.
Menimcha, bu(lar) kalitlar. — I think these are keys.
Sizning sumkangizda nimalar bor? — What is in your bag?
Mening ikkita kredit kartam bor. — I have two credit cards.

Exercise 2. Listen to speech in 5 different situations (the picture above). Number the photos. Then write down the small items that appeared in each situation. Finally, say where these situations are taking place.

Words you might not know:

chiqarmoq — to take out
chiqarib olmoq — to take out
barcha — all, entire
qurilma — installation
o’chirmoq — to turn off, to extinguish

Exercise 3. Look at the photo. What are these things? It is best to do this exercise with a partner. One asks a question about the first picture, the other answers. Then switch roles. If you are alone, ask yourself and answer yourself. Examples for the first and second picture:

Bu nima?
(Menimcha) bu qo’l soati.
Bular nimalar?
(Menimcha) bular kitoblar.
Bilmayman.

Bu nima? Bular nimalar?

Exercise 4. Check what you have in your bag or pocket (cho’ntak).

debet kartasi yoki kredit kartasi
kitob
ko’zoynak
shaxs guvohnomasi
kalitlar
ruchka
qalam
telefon
fotosurat
hamyon
soyabon

Then say it, for example: Mening cho’ntagimda kalitlar, debet kartasi va qalam bor.

What other things are in your bag or pocket? Look up their names in a dictionary or ask an Uzbek acquaintance: Kechirasiz, o’zbek tilida «…» qanday bo’ladi? Harflab ayting.

Exercise 5. Complete the conversations with a phrase from the list.

Bular nimalar, Oh yo’q, Mening ko’zoynagim qayerda, Sizning sumkangizda nimalar bor

1 A: Sizning xaltangiz qayerda?
B: Oh yo’q! U avtomobilda.
2 A: ______________?
B: U sizning sumkangizda.
3 A: Kechirasiz, amaki. _____________?
B: Mening sumkamda hamyon, soyabon va kitob bor.
4 A: __________?
B: Menimcha, bular kredit kartalari.

Exercise 6. Xuddi shu yoki boshqacha?
It is best to work in pairs. But if there is no partner, ask yourself and answer yourself. Write either X (xuddi shu) or B (boshqacha) in the boxes. If you do not know how to say a word in Uzbek, look it up in a dictionary or ask a native speaker.

xuddi shu / xuddi shunday — the same
boshqacha / turli — different, differently, otherwise

Birinchi talaba
Ikkinchi talaba

A Mening suratimda bitta soat bor. Xuddi shu yoki boshqacha?
B Turli. Menda ikkitasi bor. Mening suratimda uchta qalam bor.
A Xuddi shunday. Menda ham uchta qalam bor.

Now you can ask in Uzbek “What is this?”, “Where is this?”, “What is in your bag?” and answer these questions. What would you like to learn next?
