The President of Uzbekistan is being briefed on the population and agricultural census being carried out in the country

Information on the progress of efforts to organize and conduct the population and agricultural census in Uzbekistan was presented to Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the presidential press service reported on January 19.

The materials presented noted that the census is viewed as a tool for scientifically grounded planning of demographic processes, assessment of labor resources, and development of social infrastructure and territories. The process is organized in line with international standards and uses modern digital solutions.

The census is being conducted from January 15 to February 28, 2026, in two stages.

  • From January 15 to 31, during the first stage, citizens can complete self-registration online through a special information system.
  • From February 4 to 28, the second stage will take place: members of the “mahalla seven” will conduct door-to-door visits and complete questionnaires using tablet devices.

Online census procedures are carried out through the portal census.stat.uz, with user identification provided via the OneID system. All collected data are processed and monitored using a geographic information system. For this purpose, geo-addresses have been created for more than 7.6 million households and residential properties across the country, and special monitoring dashboards have been developed to allow real-time tracking of the process.

To ensure the organizational implementation of the census, an extensive infrastructure has been established: 14 regional and 208 district and city headquarters are operating. Around 60,000 people are involved in the process, including:

  • 54,000 representatives of the “mahalla seven”,
  • 2,600 reserve staff,
  • 4,000 members of territorial headquarters.

In addition, 480 trainers from ministries and agencies and 3,200 volunteers from higher education institutions have completed training.

As of the date the information was presented, 2.48 million households, as well as 31,000 farms and agricultural enterprises, had already registered through the special portal.

The press service also emphasized that all data provided by citizens are protected in accordance with legal requirements, personal information is kept confidential, and it is used exclusively for statistical purposes.

According to previously published information, the campaign is aimed at collecting detailed data on population size and structure, migration, marital status, employment and sources of income, as well as on the state of agriculture. The population census will cover about 38 million people, excluding citizens who have been abroad for more than one year.

The last nationwide census in Uzbekistan was conducted in 1989 as part of the USSR census. In independent Uzbekistan, only pilot censuses were conducted in 2021 and 2022. In recent years, the authorities have adopted a law establishing the regularity of such campaigns: once every ten years for the population census and once every five years for the agricultural census.

The initial budget of the census was estimated at $100 million, but in 2024 it was reduced to $64 million due to the abandonment of paper-based data collection and a reduction in the number of enumerators.

Preliminary results of the ongoing population and agricultural census are planned to be summarized on July 1, 2026, while the final results are expected to be published on July 1, 2027.
