Welcome to the first lesson of our Uzbek language self-study course for beginners. In this lesson, we will learn how to say “hello” and “hi” in Uzbek, and we will also get acquainted with the main phrases for greeting and meeting in a café. The lesson includes audio examples and dialogues with translations.
Dialogues for meeting in a café – Uzbek with translation
Exercise 1. Read, listen, repeat, and act out the dialogues. It’s best to memorize them by heart.
S = Sasha, Bb = birinchi (first) barista, Ib = ikkinchi (second) barista, A = Alisher
S: Bir stakan kofe, iltimos. — One cup of coffee, please.
Bb: Ismingiz nima? — What is your name?
S: Sasha. — Sasha
Bb: Siz Dashamisiz? — Are you Dasha?
S: Yo’q, men Sashaman. — No, I am Sasha.
Bb: Sasha. Xo’p. — Sasha. Okay.
Ib: Siz Violettamisiz? — Are you Violetta?
S: Yo’q. Men Sashaman. — No. I am Sasha.
Ib: Uzr. Siz Sashamisiz? Mana sizning kofeingiz. — Sorry. Are you Sasha? Here is your coffee.
S: Rahmat. — Thank you.
A: Assalomu alaykum! Sashamisiz? — Hello (peace be upon you)! Are you Sasha?
S: Ha. Siz Alishersizmi? — Yes. Are you Alisher?
A: Ha. Tanishganimdan xursandman. — Yes. Nice to meet you.
S: Tanishganimdan xursandman. — Nice to meet you.
A: Bir daqiqa kuting. — Wait one minute.

A: Salom. Bir stakan choy, iltimos. — Hi. One cup of tea, please.
Bb: Xo’p. Sizning ismingiz nima? — Okay. What is your name?
A: Alisher. — Alisher.
Bb: Asalbekmisiz? Bir stakan choy. — Are you Asalbek? One cup of tea.
A: Yo’q. Men Alisherman, Asalbek emasman. — No. I am Alisher, not Asalbek.
Uzbek greetings and other Uzbek words and expressions for introductions in a café
- “Hello!” in Uzbek is Assalomu alaykum!
This is a formal greeting, equivalent to English “Hello!”. Used politely, often between strangers or in official settings. - “Hi!” in Uzbek is Salom!
Informal greeting, like “Hi!”. Appropriate among friends, peers, or in casual situations.
Exercise 2. Listen, repeat, memorize words and phrases. Also practice writing them.
